Tab Design and Failures in Cylindrical Li-ion Batteries

Abstract: Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries play a vital role in today's portable and rechargeable products, and the cylindrical format is used in applications ranging from e-cigarettes to electric vehicles due to their high density and power. The tabs that connect the electrodes (current collectors) to the external circuits are one aspect of the cylindrical battery design that plays a role in reliability and safety. This paper overviews various tab materials, structures, and welding methods and then discusses failures in… Show more

“…291 During cell test including LMA in the battery, a safety chamber filled with inert gas coupling with venting system will enhance the handle of cycling LMA. 292,293 Cycled LMBs contain LMA with pulverized Li particles need to be handled carefully. During cell transfer, abnormal pressures (drop, crush, vibrate, and bump) need to be avoided.…”

“…Regarding the composition of the centre pin and anode tab, diffraction patterns showed that both phases can be described as cubic with lattice parameters of 3.594 Å and 3.529 Å respectively (Table S1-S2); it is indicated that the anode tab consists of the metallic alloy Ni0.92Cu0.02 while the center pin is based on a Fe metallic alloy. These materials are known to be used in the manufacturing of cylindrical Li-ion batteries 48 . X-ray diffraction point measurements performed during the first two full cycles were used to follow the evolution of crystalline lithiated graphite phases (Figure 2).…”

“…For instance, heterogeneous particle distributions or porosity profiles on the electrode level can lead to localized lithium plating. 133 Furthermore, the presence and location of electrode tabs in cylindrical cells can create electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical gradients, 18,130,[134][135][136][137][138][139][140][141] in some cases also leading to localized lithium plating 18,62 . Heterogeneity can also arise from ambient factors, e.g., thermal gradients induced by environment or thermal management systems.…”
