T2-Weighted Dixon Turbo Spin Echo for Accelerated Simultaneous Grading of Whole-Body Skeletal Muscle Fat Infiltration and Edema in Patients With Neuromuscular Diseases

Abstract: T2-weighted Dixon TSE imaging is an alternative for accelerated simultaneous grading of whole-body skeletal muscle fat infiltration and edema in patients with NMDs.

“…The muscle tissue in the volume of interest (VOI) was rated based on the 2D Dixon TSE T 2 ‐weighted fat‐ and water‐separated images by one reader using the Mercuri and the Morrow grading scales . Severity of fatty infiltration was assessed via the four‐point Mercuri grading scale with score 1 for muscles with normal appearance, score 2 for muscles with mild fatty infiltration (less than 30% of the volume of the original muscle), score 3 for muscles with moderate fatty infiltration (30 to 60% of the volume of the original muscles), and score 4 for muscles with severe fatty infiltration (greater than 60% of the volume of the original muscle) .…”

“…Durch körperliches Training konnte in jüngeren und älteren Männern sowohl FF als auch IMAT des Oberschenkels signifikant verringert werden [65]. Darüber hinaus gibt es einige Ganzkörper-Studien, in denen ein Dixon-Protokoll eingesetzt wurde [66][67][68][69]. Aufgrund der begrenzten räumlichen Auflösung sind diese Protokolle zwar zur Messung von FF, aber nicht von IMAT geeignet.…”

“…As a further implementation of the Dixon technique, a T2w TSE Dixon approach was used by Schlaeger et al (62) as a fast whole-body simultaneous grading of muscle fat replacement and edema in a mixed cohort of subjects with neuromuscular disorders. The authors documented a high inter-method agreement between traditional T1w Dixon, T2 STIR, and the proposed T2 TSE Dixon for rating fatty infiltration and intramuscular edema, with no need for multiple acquisition stacks to cover the entire body and the possibility to study contemporarily fat replacement and edema.…”

As a consequence, T2-weighted Dixon TSE imaging was proposed as a further step in qMRI to obtain an accelerated simultaneous grading of whole-body skeletal muscle fat infiltration and edema (62).…”
