T2 mapping in the knee after microfracture at 3.0T: correlation of global T2 values and clinical outcome – preliminary results

Abstract: These findings indicate that T2 mapping is sensitive to assess RT function and provides additional information to morphologic MRI in the monitoring of microfracture.

“…Second, the two groups analysed were substantially homogenous, but they had different rates of associate procedures which did not influence the outcome. Moreover, the qualitative evaluation of the regenerated tissue was performed using T2 mapping MRI, which is currently lacking standardization of the range values [19][20][21]. Histological evaluation was not performed in this comparative study.…”

“…T2 mapping is a MRI sequence for the evaluation of water content of the newly formed tissue [19][20][21]. T2-mapping is a multiecho (8 echoes train) and multislice (18 slices) sequence, collecting a total of 144 images.…”

“…The goal of a study by Domayer et al was to correlate clinical outcome with MRI T2 mapping after microfracture [ 6 ]. Therefore, 24 patients with a mean age of 41 years (± 14) and mean defect size of 2.0 cm 2 (0.825) were included in this level IV case series and examined 29 months (± 14) after microfracture both clinically and with MRI.…”

“…Future developments might help to correlate MRI results with histological quality of regenerated tissue. In one study MRI fi ndings correlated with the clinical outcome [ 6 ]. Histology gradings [ 2 , 10 , 11 , 16 , 21 , 29 ] generally show variable results.…”
