T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia from miRNA perspective: Basic concepts, experimental approaches, and potential biomarkers

Abstract: T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is a rare, aggressive and heterogeneous malignancy originating from T-cell precursors. The mechanisms of T-ALL pathogenesis related to non-protein coding part of the genome are currently intensively studied. miRNAs are short, non-coding molecules acting as negative regulators of gene expression which shape phenotype of cells in a complex and context-specific manner. miRNAs may act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors; several miRNAs have been related to drug resistance … Show more

“…This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis study of our knowledge to conduct a thorough analysis effect on T-ALL with causespecific events in patients suffering from T-cell Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. As mentioned earlier, previously published literature reviews 20,[55][56][57] have hypothesised the possibility of use of miRNA in the prognosis of T-ALL patients.…”

“…Importantly, the same study highlights miR‐708 as a predictor of GC response and risk stratification 81 . Even if miRNAs can control cell metabolism for example GR biosynthesis and activation, 82 these studies do not provide a functional link between miRNAs, cell metabolism, and drug resistance and remain so far with a predictive character.…”

“…Precursor T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia instead arises from early T cell progenitors. It is a rapidly growing, aggressive disease (14, 15), occurring more frequently in late childhood, adolescence and young adults. T-ALL represents 10-15% of pediatric and 20-25% of adult cases of ALL in the western world and Japan.…”
