“…Based on the roots of family therapy and its evolution, we consider the foundations of a contemporary systemic family therapy approach to be cybernetics, which considers the family as an information processing machine; general systems theory, which considers the family as a natural system (see Becvar & Becvar, 2013); and social constructionism, which views the family as a meaning-making system (see Hoffman, 1980). Taken together these foundations highlight the defining characteristics of systemic family therapy as a framework for practice as context, relationships, and meaning-making (Flaskas, 2010;Nichols & Schwartz, 2008;Sexton & Stanton, 2016). Each school of family therapy differs in the specific application of the knowledge gained from family systems theory, for example, Minuchin considered the structural organisation of the family, Satir considered communication between family members, and in narrative therapy the shift was from families as cybernetic systems to families as meaning-making systems (Campbell, 2003).…”

“…Systems theory has been applied in various scientific traditions and most prominently in sociology (Luhmann, ; Sexton & Stanton, ). In the studies in the present review, systemic theories are applied within a more psychological tradition, looking at families as systems (Hughes et al, ; Nansel, Iannotti, & Liu, ; Sullivan‐Bolyai et al, ).…”

“…Psychologists recognize that there is a close link between systems and theories [65][66][67]. Kerlinger and Lee (2000, p. 11) [68] define a theory as "a set of interrelated constructs (concepts), definitions, and propositions that present a systematic view of phenomena by specifying relations among variables, with the purpose of explaining and predicting the phenomena".…”

“…Both also share the goal of understanding this structure so as to predict and change outcomes. It could be argued that the core difference between systems and theories is that systems are more closely connected to real world problems or processes and thus are broader in their scope with theories explaining the specific elements of systems [67].…”
