Systems Analysis as a Tool for Research in Scientific Management of Libraries: A State of the Art Review

Abstract

The problem of research in library and information science can be small scale or large scale; can be specific or general, can be short term or long term; can be very practical or very theoretical (50). Kajberg (27) evaluates research methods in librarianship, with American viewpoint where as Slamecka (43) observes some of the pragmatic approaches to theoretical research in information science. Vickery (50) illustrates the various 'analytical techniques for investigating libraries'. Priscilla Rose's (40) approach is through the following three manners: i) Behavioral approach, ii) Systems approach and iii) Other less important varieties of approaches. Bellomy (2) solves library problems through systems approach, whereas Elton and Vickery (17) suggest the scope of operational research in the library and information field.Of all the above approaches, this state of the art review discusses only the systems approach for research in library and information field. An attempt has been made to discover the fundamental concepts behind systems analysis and its possible application to library administration and operation. Much emphasis has been paid to the technique aspect of the subject. The review deals with the following phases of the subject: i) systems and systems characteristics, ii) systems analysis, its definition, scope and application, iii) phases of systems study, iv) techniques of systems study, and v) future prospects.
