Systemic lupus erythematosus with choroidopathy and serous retinal detachment

Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus associated ocular manifestations usually consist of cotton-wool spots and retinal hemorrhages. The authors report one case of lupus choroidopathy revealed by bilateral serous retinal detachment, occurring 4 months after a systemic flare-up of the disease. An immune complexes-mediated phenomenon is involved in these manifestations, which are usually controlled by systemic corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents. Plasma exchanges were successfully applied in this case, resulting… Show more

“…23 Histopathological studies of the eye in SLE have shown inflammatory cell infiltrates within the choroid, as well as immunoglobulin and complement deposition in the choroidal vasculature and damage to the retinal pigment epithelium. 10,24 In SLE, cotton wool patches and retinal hemorrhage are commonly found. 25 But choroidopathy is rare in patients with SLE.…”

“…In these patients, serous retinal detachment secondary to choroidal involvement is reported. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Different imaging methods have been used to show the choroidal involvement in patients with SLE. 16,26 Indocyanine green angiography (ICG) is an invasive imaging method used to evaluate vascular structure and tissue inflammation.…”

“…Choroidopathy, uveal effusions, and serous retinal detachment may occasionally occur in patients with SLE [41][42][43][44][45][46]. Significant uveal effusions may also lead to secondary angle-closure glaucoma [47].…”

“…Several groups who have observed bilateral retinal detachments in the setting of SLE have noted abnormalities of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) [7,8-10]. Matsuo and colleagues [9] hypothesized that anti-retinal pigment epithelium antibodies were involved in causing a dysfunction of the RPE which ultimately led to the development of serous retinal detachment.…”
