Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and postoperative complications after orthognathic surgery

Abstract: Symptoms of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) presenting immediately after surgery have lately been regarded as potential warnings of impending postoperative complications and multiple organ failure. Reports discussing the relationship between operative stress and SIRS are found in the field of digestive surgery, but not in that of oral surgery. “…Major surgery under local or general anaesthesia is strongly associated with dysfunction of the immune system 1–5,18,19 . In clinical practice, postoperative inflammation is generally believed to result from surgical stress and intraoperative interventions 1–5 . Our previous experience 15,20 prompted us to speculate that surgery‐induced stress might either aggravate or disguise the role of anaesthesia per se in postoperative renal complications.…”

“…Although CRP has been assessed in the diagnosis of severe post-operative surgical site infections after orthopedic [24,26], pancreatic [21], and colo-rectal surgery [10,12,14,27], it has not been defined clearly at which time points the expression of CRP might be useful in the assessment of OSI. We conducted a prospective observational study to clarify the value of CRP on post-operative days two and five in patients submitted to elective colorectal surgery by open (OPEN) and laparoscopic (LAP) access.…”
