Systemic inflammation in patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with metabolic syndrome

Abstract: Context:India has 18% of the global population and an increasing burden of chronic respiratory diseases. The prevalence of Metabolic syndrome (MS) was found to be as high as 39.7% among Indian population. Metabolic syndrome is found to be more common in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) when compared to the general population. This study was done to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in COPD and the association of systemic inflammation in COPD patients with metabolic syndrome.Methodology:Th… Show more

“…Thus, systemic inflammation in COPD is an important mechanism that may affect the function of other organs and tissues. The systemic inflammatory process, which is part of the pathogenesis of COPD, may lead to the development or exacerbation of comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome [ 264 , 265 , 266 ].…”

“…Second, IL-6 level is in line with CRD, such as COPD, with exacerbations with hyperglycemia; thus, a higher IL-6 level was found in CD. This overexpression of IL-6 may contribute to cardiovascular diseases, such as CAD, heart failure, and arrhythmias [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. Thus, IL-6-related oxidative stress of atherosclerosis counterbalances the antiatherosclerosis effect of GLP-1RA, leading to an aHR of CAD and heart failure with a null effect [ 30 ].…”
