Systemic chemotherapy using paclitaxel and carboplatin plus regional hyperthermia and hyperbaric oxygen treatment for non-small cell lung cancer with multiple pulmonary metastases: Preliminary results

Abstract: The novel combined therapy of paclitaxel and carboplatin with HT and HBO may therefore be a feasible and promising modality for treating NSCLC with multiple pulmonary metastases, and the results justify further evaluation to clarify the benefits of this treatment regimen.

“…The Thermotron RF-8 is a capacitive heating device operating at 8 MHz, in which the patient is placed between two electrodes connected to a high-power RF generator, and the use of this device has been reported previously [11][12][13]. In 23 of 33 patients, both the upper and lower electrodes were 30 cm in diameter, placed on opposite sides of the thoracic region, in 3 patients, both the upper and lower electrodes were 25 cm, in 4 patients, the upper electrode was 25 cm and lower was 30 cm, and in 3 patients, the upper electrode was 10 cm and the lower was 30 cm.…”

“…Moreover, clinical studies in patients with gliomas 160 and NSCLC (ref. 161 ) have shown promising results, and several studies with the combination of HBOT and radiotherapy have been also performed 162 . However, this approach is still in its infancy and a number of questions, e.g.…”

“…By altering the pharmacokinetic parameters and increasing the regional blood flow of tumors, thermotherapy may enhance the cytotoxicity and improve the therapeutic response to anticancer drugs. Other evidence suggests that thermotherapy may help inhibit DNA repair by regulating the DNA polymerase; furthermore, the synthesis and secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor is restrained and the formation of new blood vessels is effectively reduced (9,10). In addition, thermotherapy may enhance the cytotoxic effect of irradiation on S-phase cells and alleviate the toxicity reaction of normal tissue in selected cases (11).…”
