Systemic Adverse Reaction to Specific Immunotherapy

Abstract: Background: Allergen immunotherapy has been reported to be effective in reducing allergic symptoms and drug consumption in cases of respiratory allergy. However, some concerns still exist about the relative safety of allergen immunotherapy. This form of therapy has a potential risk of serious systemic reactions. Objective: To evaluate the frequency of systemic reactions due to subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy in Iraq and to identify factors associated with increased risk of adverse systemic reaction. Methods… Show more

“…Consistent with Serrano et al [18] and Adamic et al [19], large local reactions were the most frequent ADVrs reported [20] and are associated with systemic reactions [21]. The ADVrs presented mostly during the buildup phase, in accordance with other studies [10,16]. As an extension of this observation, we demonstrate that there is a 3-fold increased risk of suffering symptoms of 2 organ systems, after 12 weeks.…”

“…Nacaroglu et al [10], Al Samarai et al [16], and Asero [17] reported that the frequency of ADVrs to AIT is approximately 12%; these data are comparable to those in our study. Consistent with Serrano et al [18] and Adamic et al [19], large local reactions were the most frequent ADVrs reported [20] and are associated with systemic reactions [21].…”

“…None of the developed systemic reactions had life threatening reactions. House dust mite was with a predictive value for development of systemic adverse reactions (OR=2.3, p=0.0001) [54]. However, this study indicated that HDM specific immunotherapy was with good tolerance…”

“…Tinkelman 14 reported the results of their 1-year prospective study with SRR of 0.054, but patients only waited for 20 minutes and they may have missed numerous delayed reactions. Alsamarai 15 reported an SRR of 0.25 in a 9-year prospective study using European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology reporting system. 16 Cox et al 11 documented an average SRR of 0.2 per 100 injections with conventional inhalant allergen immunotherapy.…”
