Bryophytes are indicators of climatic, environmental and ecology conditions and are useful in the characterization of the vegetation types. In this study, we analyzed the brioflora of 2-ha plots, one of Restinga Forest (RF) and the other of Lowland Ombrophilous Dense Forest (LF), located in the Núcleo Picinguaba, State Park of Serra do Mar (São Paulo state, Brazil) aiming to: a) compare the structure of these communities; b) compare the floristic composition between these areas and with other coastal vegetations of southeastern Brazil; c) verify if the bryophytes of the Atlantic Forest lowlands have phytogeographic patterns wider than those of the montane species. In each plot, the bryophytes samples were collected at ten randomized subplots (10 × 10 m). We found 152 species (87 liverworts, 64 mosses and one hornwort), of which 109 occur in RF (40 exclusives) and 112 in LF (43 exclusives). In terms of species richness and taxonomic diversity, LF was more diverse; however, the Simpson and Shannon index of diversity is higher in RF. The floristic composition, life form and ecological groups of light tolerance were significantly different between these two forests. Canopy opening (RF) and number of rocks (LF) were important environmental variables that influenced bryophyte distribution in the study areas. When evaluated in terms of landscape, the subplots of RF and LR form distinct floristic groups; however, at the regional level, the bryophytes of these two forest types have more similarities among themselves than with other Atlantic Forest areas. Bryophyte community observed in the Restinga Forest of Picinguaba shows more similarity with that of the neighbor Lowland Ombrophilous Dense Forest than with other Restinga or coastal formation, such as mangroves and caxetal. In both forests types studied, the majority of taxa (> 90%) is widely distributed in the world, presenting phytogeographic pattern equal to or wider than the Neotropical. Our results corroborate the idea that the RF of Picinguaba is a unique vegetation formation, presenting elements of ombrophilous and dryer forests. In addition, they reinforce the idea that, for the tropical bryophyte species, the phytogeographic patterns are wider in areas of lower altitudes. Plagiochila is the largest genus of bryophytes of Colombia. A total of 175 species have been recorded from the country but the majority of these are synonyms. In this paper 57 species are accepted for Colombia. A key to the Colombian species of Plagiochila is provided and each species is briefly described, with data on types, synonyms, published illustrations, morphology, geographical distribution and habitat, as well as a brief discussion of differentiating characters and taxonomic affinity. Among the countries of tropical America, Colombia has the highest diversity of Plagiochila followed by Ecuador (53 species) and Costa Rica (50 species). More than half of the Colombian species are widely distributed throughout tropical America and seven of them occur also in Africa and/or Western Europe. About one fourth of the species are restricted to the northern Andes, which is the centre of diversity of Plagiochila in the New World. The majority of the species grow as epiphytes in humid Andean forests. Diversity peaks in the upper montane forest belt between 2000-3000 m. Sixteen species occur in the páramo belt and five are exclusive to páramo. Eighteen species occur in lowland rainforest. Plagiochila eggersii, recorded from lowland rainforest of the Chocó, is new to Colombia.Key words: Andean forest, bryophytes, Colombia, elevational distribution, liverworts, páramo, Plagiochila, taxonomy. El género Plagiochila (Marchantiophyta) en Colombia ResumenPlagiochila es el mayor género de briófitos de Colombia. Un total de 175 especies han sido registradas para el país, pero la mayoría de estos nombres son sinónimos. En este trabajo se aceptan 57 especies para Colombia. Se proporciona una clave para las especies colombianas de Plagiochila y cada especie se describe brevemente con datos sobre los tipos, sinónimos, ilustraciones publicadas, morfología, distribución y hábitat, así como un breve análisis de sus caracteres principales y afinidad taxonómica. Entre los países de la América tropical, Colombia tiene la mayor diversidad de Plagiochila seguido de Ecuador (53 especies) y Costa Rica (50 especies). Más de la mitad de las especies colombianas están ampliamente distribuidas en América tropical y siete de ellas se presentan también en África y / o Europa occidental. Alrededor de una cuarta parte de las especies están restringidas para los Andes del norte, que es el centro de diversidad de Plagiochila en el Nuevo Mundo. La mayoría de las especies crecen como epífitas en bosques húmedos andinos. La mayor diversidad se encuentra entre 2000-3000 m. The Neotropical liverwort Plagiochila papillifolia Steph. is conspeci®c with P. caespiticia Spruce ex Herzog (nom. inval.), P. deciduifolia Steph., P. solmsii Steph. and P. verruculosa R.M.Schust.; it is reported from the Azores, new to Europe. Morphologically it shows a nity with sect. Bidentes Carl; phytochemically, several of its lipophilic secondary metabolites are the same as those of P. retrorsa Gottsche, another Neotropical species reported only recently from Macaronesia.
