We conducted phylogenetic analyses based on complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences among southern and central Mexican cyprinid species, included in the genera Notropis and Hybopsis. In addition 15 northern species of the genera Notropis and Hybopsis were included in the analyses in order to place the Mexican species into a larger phylogenetic framework. The phylogenetic relationships supported the existence of five major clades: (1) including species of the subgenus Alburnops of the genus Notropis plus N. shumardi; (2) species of the subgenus Notropis; (3) species of the genus Hybopsis; (4) species of the N. texanus + N. volucellus species group of the genus Notropis; (5) Mexican endemic species of the genus Notropis plus the genus Yuriria. Previous phylogenetic inferences based on morphological characters resolved the Mexican minnows analysed as N. sallaei, N. calientis, N. boucardi and Y. alta, non‐monophyletic. According to our cytochrome b evidence all Mexican minnows of the genera Notropis and Yuriria formed a monophyletic group with respect to the northern species of the genera Notropis and Hybopsis. Within the Mexican clade, three well‐supported clades were identified: the first included the closely related species N. moralesi and N. boucardi, which occur in three independent drainages of south Mexico; the second consisted of two different lineages, N. imeldae and an undescribed species of Notropis, inhabiting two independent drainages of south Mexico; the third comprised two central Mexican Notropis species (N. calientis and N. sallaei) and the Y. alta populations. Based on this study and pending a more extensive taxonomic revision of the genus Notropis, we adopt the conservative criterion of considering all Notropis species from southern and central Mexico examined, including Y. alta, as belonging to the genus Notropis. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 80, 323–337.

Premating barriers such as variation in reproductive behaviour can evolve quickly, but because gametic and postzygotic incompatibilities often evolve more slowly, circumstances that bring gametes into contact can breach the boundaries of premating isolation. In aquatic environments, the gametes of organisms with external fertilization are released into a constantly moving environment and may come into contact with heterospecific gametes. In fishes, nest association (spawning in another species’ nest) is a behaviour that brings gametes from different species into close spatiotemporal proximity. These interactions might increase chances of hybridization, especially when multiple species associate with a single nest builder. This study addresses these interactions in the largest clade of North American freshwater fishes, the minnows (Cyprinidae). We compiled a list of over 17,000 hybrid specimens in conjunction with species distribution data, breeding behaviours, and an inferred phylogeny to test if breeding behaviour, in addition to evolutionary history, is an important predictor of hybridization. We find that breeding behaviour is a significant predictor of hybridization, even when phylogenetic relatedness and divergence time are accounted for. Specifically, nest associates are more likely to hybridize with other nest associates whereas non‐nesting species had relatively low rates of hybridization.

The study of the emcrald shiner Notropis athcrinoidcs Rafincsque Mas conducted in 1967 and 1968 in Lake Sinicoe, a eutrophic inland lake with an area of 725 ktn2 situated in the Province of Ontario, Canada. On the basis of meristic characters, the emerald shiner of Lake Sinicoe conforms to the classical description of the species and IS not distinct from the form inhabiting the Great L,akes. Annulus formation occurrcd in early June on age I fish but second and third annuli were not formed on older fish until late July through August. Young-of-the-year emerald shiners reached a total length of 45 mm by October;age 1 were 81 nun and age I1 measured 92 mm by the same month. By September, age I female emerald shiners attained a size superiority of 5 nim over males of that age group and by the end of the third summer agc II femalcs excceded age I[ males by 8 mm. Spawning occurred offshore in the latter part of July when surface water temperatures approximated 20" C. Of the three age groups, age I1 specimens were the most prevalent on the spawning grounds. Average absolute fecundity was 3410 eggs in fish of all age classes combined. Differences in water temperature seem to strongly influence the seasonal distribution pattern of the emerald shiner. The final temperature preferendurn of the species, as determined in a vertical temperature gradient tank, was 25°C. The emerald shiner is extensively utilized as a bait fish by anglers and appears to be an important forage fish. The plasticity of the species to adapt to a variety of ecological conditions and the species potcntial for high production favour its introduction to waters requiring a good converter in the food chain.
