Systematics of Species Referred to the Genus angiostrongylus

Abstract: Based on morphological criteria of the male bursa, angiostrongylid nematodes often placed in the genus Angiostrongylus Kamensky (1905) were found to be heterogeneous, comprising species which are relegated to 5 distinct genera: Angiostrongylus Kamensky, 1905 (syn. Haemostrongylus Railliet and Henry, 1907); Parastrongylus Baylis, 1928 (syn. Pulmonema Chen, 1935, Rattostrongylus Schulz, 1951, Morerastrongylus Chabaud, 1972, Chabaudistrongylus Kontrimavichus and Delyamure, 1979); Angiocaulus Schulz, Orlov and Kut… Show more

“…1E) were long with transversal striations. These descriptions agreed with those of Kinsella (1971), Ubelaker (1986) and Bessa et al (2000). This is the first report of the presence of A. vasorum in C. thous in Minas Gerais State, the first occurrence of this nematode in either domestic or wild animals in Juiz de Fora county.…”

“…For species identification, the specimens were clarified in Lactophenol and mounted according to Amato et al (1991). They were identified according to Kinsella (1971), Ubelaker (1986) and Bessa et al (2000). The ecological analyses were carried out according to Bush et al (1997) and Zuben (1997).…”

“…These worms develop infective larvae during the intermediate mollusk stage. Due to the morphological heterogeneity of male bursa, Ubelaker (287) proposed grouping the species that have rodents as hosts within the genus Parastrongylus. This change in the name of the genus has not been widely accepted, though some have used Parastrongylus as a synonym for Angiostrongylus.…”

“…All lateral rays of the copulatory bursa arose from a long common trunk, compatible with Parastrongylus and distinct from closely related Angiostrongylus. 21 The length of the spicules (Fig. 8) (351-430 mm) and the longer length of the mediolateral ray in comparison with the other lateral rays (externo and postero lateral rays) (Fig.…”
