Systematics of Opsiphanes Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Brassolini): an integrative approach

Abstract: Opsiphanes Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Brassolini) is an exclusively Neotropical genus, occurring from Argentina to Mexico. Until the present study, Opsiphanes was considered to contain 14 species, 60 subspecies, and 38 synonyms. The considerable phenotypic variation of species and subspecies of the genus has affected the taxonomy of the group by causing the proliferation of several names that have been proposed to represent their diversity, taxa that have often not been adequately … Show more

“…Recently, it was designated as O. fabricii fabricii by Piovesan et al (2022), who revised taxonomy for Opsiphanes species and subspecies, through analyses of information on immature stages and adult morphology, with molecular data and biogeographic distribution. This subspecies occurs in the neotropical region of the world, from Mexico to Panama (Piovesan et al 2022). In Mexico, it was recorded in tropical or subtropical areas of Veracruz (Raguso and Llorente-Bousquets 1990), Nayarit (Llorente-Bousquets et al 2004), Campeche (Maya-Martínez 2005), Chiapas (Morales-Morales 2018), Oaxaca (Luis-Martinez et al 2022), San Luis Potosí, Morelos, Guerrero, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco (Piovesan et al 2022), and Tamaulipas, Jalisco, and Colima (Warren et al 2023).…”
