“…Descriptive terminology used here follows the IAWA list of microscopic features for softwood identification (Baas et al, 2004), with the addition of terms defined in Philippe and Bamford (2008), seriation and contiguity indices proposed by Pujana et al (2016). Pit counting method follows suggestions made by Philippe et al (2013). The palynological samples were treated following standard techniques for extraction and Figure 1.…”

“…This author proposed that the horizontal septa derived from globular tyloses. Philippe et al (2013) also mentioned the presence of septa-like structures in several Asian specimens related to Xenoxylon, but they considered that their origin is uncertain and without taxonomic value. Feng et al (2015) proposed that septa-like structures, when not related to ray cells, may likely represent host cell reactions to fungal attacks or the remains of metabolic products of fungal enzymatic activity.…”

“…It usually occurs north of 45°, but there are some exotic data from continental Mesozoic redbeds in South-East Asia (Boureau 1950, Vozenin-Serra & Privé-Gill, 1991Boonchai et al, 2017). These Xenoxylon occurences are questionning as the genus is supposedly an indicator of mid-to high palaeolatitudes and cool or wet climates (Philippe et al, 2013;Oh et al, 2015). Frustratingly none of the above mentionned southeast Asia Xenoxylon fossils were found in-situ, except for the Vietnamese data, the age of which has been considered dubious (Boureau, 1950).…”

“…Type: as the Gothan's type material is lost, a neotype was proposed and illustrated by Philippe et al (2013). It originates from the Bathonian of Poland.…”
