The Indian subcontinent's biota and biostratigraphy is amongst the least well known internationally of any Cambrian succession worldwide. Recent revision of previously described type material and a substantial number of new finds reveal a typical Cambrian skeletonized fauna and an organic walled biota, as well as various trace fossils. This biota, reviewed here synoptically, currently contains 51 non-agnostoid trilobite genera belonging to 50 species; 15 genera and species of agnostoids; one species of bradoriid arthropod; 18 brachiopod genera containing 20 species; echinoderm thecal and columnal plates; a soft-bodied eldoniid; representatives of three hyolith genera; other small shelly fossils some of which are identified to species level; acritarchs; and a variety of ichnotaxa. Regional biostratigraphic zonations for trilobites, brachiopods, small shelly fossils, and trace fossils are herein combined into an integrated Cambrian biostratigraphical scheme that permits correlation along and across the lithotectonic zones of the Himalayan margin and southward onto cratonic India. The late Cambrian-Early Ordovician sequences of the Cordillera Oriental in northwestern Argentina are extensive and highly fossiliferous. The olenid trilobiteParabolinella argentinensisKobayashi sensu Harrington and Leanza, 1957 was reported from a great number of Tremadocian localities and includes a wide range of morphologies. Based on specimens collected from the type locality (Purmamarca, Jujuy) and the quebrada Moya (Huacalera, Jujuy), as well as on material of the Harrington and Leanza collections in the University of Buenos Aires, classic morphometry and geometric morphometry methods were used to evaluate the variability in the cranidium ofP.argentinensis. The results obtained from the two methodologies are similar. Both analyses allowed the review of the diagnosis ofP.argentinensis, and the distinction of two new morphologies:Parabolinella clarisaen. sp. andParabolinella pompadourisn. sp. The results show how morphogeometrics distinguishes more clearly the three morphotypes and provides graphical representations of the differences between those groups and how from the representations plus the correlation between classical variables and principal components, new diagnostic characters that distinguish the three morphospecies, can be identified.

The geochemical study of siliciclastic rocks from the Lower Cambrian of Parahio Valley has been studied to describe the provenance, chemical weathering and tectonic setting. The K 2 O/Al 2 O 3 ratio and positive correlation of Co (r = 0.85), Ni (r = 0.86), Zn (r = 0.82), Rb (r = 0.98) with K 2 O reflects that the presence of clay minerals control the abundances of these elements and suggests a warm and humid climate for this region. The chondrite normalized REE pattern of the samples is equivalent to upper continental crust, which reflects enriched LREE and flat HREE with negative Eu anomaly. The tectonic setting discriminant diagram log[K 2 O/Na 2 O] vs. SiO 2 ; [SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ] vs. log[K 2 O/Na 2 O]; [SiO 2 /20]-[K 2 O+Na 2 O]-[TiO 2 +Fe 2 O 3 +MgO] indicates transitional tectonic setting from an active continental margin to a passive margin. The discriminant function plot indicates quartzose sedimentary provenance, and to some extent, the felsic igneous provenance, derived from weathered granite, gneissic terrain and/or from pre-existing sedimentary terrain. The CIA value indicates low to moderate degree of chemical weathering and the average ICV values suggests immature sediments deposited in tectonically active settings. The A-CN-K diagram indicates that these sediments were generated from source rocks of the upper continental crust.
