Systematics and biogeography of theBoana albopunctataspecies group (Anura, Hylidae), with the description of two new species from Amazonia

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…Here, we found evidence of Pebas system promoting the diversi cation of arboreal anurans, given that the three most speciose genus in Phyllomedusidae had origin and diversi cation in this area. This is an important nding, since other studies regarding arboreal frog groups have shown diversi cation after the regression of the Pebas system (Boana albopunctata species group; Fouquet et al, 2021b). As far as we know, our present study is the most comprehensive framework about this issue.…”

“…tinae and A. tapajos clade C) await formal description. These candidate species, together with other recently described species ( Ferrão et al, 2017 ; Ferrão et al, 2020a ; Ferrão et al, 2020b ; Fouquet et al, 2021a ; Fouquet et al, 2021b ; Melo-Sampaio, Ferrão & Moraes, 2021 ; Ferrão et al, 2022 ), highlight both the importance of the upper Madeira Basin as a center of regional biodiversity and the need for additional taxonomic studies in this threatened part of Amazonia.…”

“…Many species of Amazonian frogs once thought to be geographically widespread are now known to contain numerous additional species, each with a narrow distribution ( Lima, Ferrão & Silva, 2020 ; Vacher et al, 2020 ; Fouquet et al, 2021a ; Fouquet et al, 2021b ). This phenomenon is especially evident in nurse frogs of the genus Allobates ( Zimmermann & Zimmermann, 1988 ).…”

“…The population previously identified as Boana multifasciata (Günther, 1859) from the Guiana Shield is currently known to be an unnamed candidate species, inhabiting the Guianas and the Brazilian states of Roraima, Pará and Amapá (Fouquet et al 2021c) based only on molecular data. We added the molecularbased records from Vacher et al (2020) and Fouquet et al (2021c) corresponding to this taxon, as well as the literature records with overall morphology more similar to B. multifasciata. We decided to keep using this name for Amapá populations until more studies clarify their taxonomic status.…”
