Systematic study on evolution of self-assembly morphologies of CABC tetrablock terpolymers with varied segment lengths

Abstract: The self-assembly structures of PEEA-PMMA-PGLMMA-PEEA CABC-type tetrablock terpolymers with a fixed length of the PGLMMA (red colour) segment and varied lengths of the PMMA (blue) and PEEA (green) segments were systematically studied.

“…Due to their synthesis requiring four steps, a limited number of studies on thermoresponsive tetrablock copolymers are reported in the literature, even though more can be found on their successful synthesis and/or application in other sectors. ,,, In one of the studies, ABCD thermo- and pH-responsive quaterpolymers were synthesized and investigated, where A, B, C, and D units are hydrophilic EG, hydrophobic styrene, thermoresponsive NIPAAm, and pH- and thermoresponsive (when uncharged) DMAEMA, respectively . The synthesis was implemented via reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and click chemistry.…”

“…The inherent micellization was investigated, and the stability of micelles was modified via crosslinking . In a recently published study, the self-assembly of various ABCA tetrablock terpolymers, where A, B, and C blocks consist of di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate (DEGA), methyl methacrylate, and glycerol monomethacrylate, respectively, was investigated . The morphology of self-assembled structures could be tuned by modifying the block length, and interestingly, it was affected by the temperature-response of DEGA, with the structure changing from toroids to spherical starlike micelles …”

“…Generally speaking, an apparently straightforward approach to multi‐stimuli responsivity is to multiply the number of blocks. However, it should be noted that the phase behavior of multiblocks at the nanoscale exhibits a higher complexity with respect to diblocks and also depends on the exact sequence and composition of blocks 161,187,212,213 …”
