Systematic Study of the Acoustoelectric Interaction of Surface Waves with Inhomogeneously Distributed Free Carriers in a Photoconductor

Abstract

A systematic study of the acoustoelectric interaction of surface waves with inhomogeneously distributed free carriers is performed in the sandwich structure CdS on LiNbO,. The real part and the imaginary part of the propagation constant are determined experimentally as a function of the wavelength and intensity of the light used for illumination of the photoconductor. The results show a resonance effect a t a certain carrier concentration a t least for the imaginary part of the propagation constant which is typical for the acoustoelectric effect. Quantitative calculations performed within a certain approximation give good agreement with the experiment for the acousto. electric effect and the photoelectric response. On account of the results i t is demonstrated that the interaction can be used to determine the colour of optical images.Eine systematische Untersuchung der akustoelektrischen Wechselwirkung von Oberflachenwellen mit inhomogen verteilten Ladungstragern wird fur die Sandwich-Struktur CdS auf LiNbO, durchgefuhrt. Der Realteil und der Imaginarteil der Ausbreitungskonstante werden als Funktion cler Lichtwellenlange und der Intensitat des fur die Beleuchtung des Photoleiters verwendeten Lichtes bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen einen fur den akustoelektrischen Effekt typischen Resonanzeffekt bei einer bestimmten Ladungstragerkonzentration. Dies gilt zumindest fur den 1 maginarteil der Ausbreitungskonstante. Quantitative Rechnungen, die in einer bestimmten Naherung durchgefuhrt werden, geben eine gute Ubereinstimmung mit dem Experiment fur den akustoelektrischen Effekt und fur die Photoempfindlichkeit. Auf Grund dieser Ergebnisse wird gezeigt, daB diese Wechselwirkung dazu verwendet werden kann, die Farbe optischer Bilder zu bestimmen.
