Research methods play an imperative role in research quality as well as educating young researchers, however, the application thereof is unclear which can be detrimental to the field of psychology. Therefore, this systematised review aimed to determine what research methods are being used, how these methods are being used and for what topics in the field. Our review of 999 articles from five journals over a period of 5 years indicated that psychology research is conducted in 10 topics via predominantly quantitative research methods. Of these 10 topics, social psychology was the most popular. The remainder of the conducted methodology is described. It was also found that articles lacked rigour and transparency in the used methodology which has implications for replicability. In conclusion this article, provides an overview of all reported methodologies used in a sample of psychology journals. It highlights the popularity and application of methods and designs throughout the article sample as well as an unexpected lack of rigour with regard to most aspects of methodology. Possible sample bias should be considered when interpreting the results of this study. It is recommended that future research should utilise the results of this study to determine the possible impact on the field of psychology as a science and to further investigation into the use of research methods. Results should prompt the following future research into: a lack or rigour and its implication on replication, the use of certain methods above others, publication bias and choice of sampling method.

Recurrent miscarriage (RM) was recently re-defined by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) as the loss of two or more consecutive pregnancies. Before this, and indeed still in some countries, RM was defined as three or more consecutive pregnancy losses. While the incidence of RM depends on the definition employed and population studied, it is generally accepted to affect 1-6% of women of reproductive age. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for RM have been published by some professional organisations. While there are CPGs on miscarriage in Ireland, there are none concerning RM specifically. The aim of this systematic review is to identify, appraise and describe published CPGs for the management, investigation and/or follow-up of RM within high-income countries. Electronic databases (MEDLINE (Ovid®; 1946), Embase® (Elsevier; 1980), CINAHL Complete (EBSCOhost; 1994), Web of Science™ (Thomson Reuters), Scopus (Elsevier; 2004), and Open Grey (INIST-CNRS; 2011)), selected guideline repositories, and the websites of professional societies will be searched to identify CPGs, published within the last 20 years, for potential inclusion. Two reviewers will review abstracts and full texts independently against the eligibility criteria. Characteristics and recommendations of included CPGs will be extracted by one reviewer and double-checked by another. Two reviewers will use the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation version 2 (AGREE II) instrument independently to assess the quality of the included CPGs. Narrative synthesis will be conducted to appraise and compare CPGs and their recommendations or guidance therein. The identification, appraisal and description of published CPGs in other high-income countries will be a valuable first step in informing efforts to promote the optimisation and standardisation of RM care.

Recommendations for the Prescription of Opioids at Discharge After Abdominopelvic Surgery

he current epidemic of opioid-related mortality has shed light on poor opioid prescribing practices after abdominopelvic surgery. Research has demonstrated that substantial variations exist in the amount of opioid prescribed at discharge [1][2][3] and that opioid prescriptions are often in excess of actual patient requirements. 1,[3][4][5] These findings are particularly concerning given that more than 70% of patients store their excess opioids in unlocked locations and do not properly dispose of them. 6 Such easily accessible supplies of prescription opioids may lead to unintended harms, such as opioid misuse 7 and accidental overdoses. 8 Moreover, there is growing awareness that a substantial proportion of opioid-naive patients will become long-term users of opioids after initial exposure in the immediate postoperative period. 9-13 Because long-term opioid use may lead to physiological dependence and misuse, prevention in the early phases of perioperative care is important. However, abdominal surgeons may not be aware of the risk of long-term opioid use, and they infrequently perform a risk assessment in their patients. 14 A lack of guidance for surgeons has been cited as a major factor contributing to the suboptimal nature of current postsurgical opioid prescribing practices. 1,14,15 Guidelines published by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Pain Society provide general recommendations on the use of opioids in managing pain during the inpatient postoperative period, but they failed to explicitly address how clinicians should prescribe opioids at discharge. 16,17 Guidelines for the treatment of acute pain from the Centers for Diseases IMPORTANCE The prescription of opioids at discharge after abdominopelvic surgery is variable and often excessive. A lack of guidance for abdominopelvic surgeons may explain the suboptimal nature of current prescribing practices.OBJECTIVE To systematically review existing recommendations on the prescription of opioids at discharge, the appropriate disposal of opioids, and the prevention of chronic postsurgical opioid use after abdominopelvic surgery.EVIDENCE REVIEW This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. From January 2010 to December 2018, a search of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, HealthSTAR, Embase, and the difficult to locate and unpublished (ie, gray) literature was performed using a peer-reviewed strategy with variations of the terms opioid, surgery, and guideline to identify English-language documents that contained recommendations published by professional societies or health care institutions. The quality of clinical practice guidelines was assessed using the Appraisal of Guidelines Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool. A descriptive synthesis of results was performed.FINDINGS Of 5530 citations screened, 41 full-text documents were included in the systematic review.
