Systematic review of the use and value of computer simulation modelling in population health and health care delivery

Abstract: Simulation modelling is a powerful method for modelling both small and large populations to inform policy makers in the provision of health care. It has been applied to a wide variety of health care problems. Although the number of modelling papers has grown substantially over recent years, further research is required to assess the value of modelling.

“…There is much discussion on the use and potential use of simulation in health with applications ranging across planning, scheduling, reorganisation and management of healthcare and hospital services, communicable diseases, bio-terrorism, screening, costs of illness, economic evaluation (comparing alternative healthcare interventions), policy and strategy evaluation, and performance modelling (Fone et al, 2003;Mustafee et al, 2010;Günal and Pidd, 2010). Comprehensive reviews of the use of simulation in health are provided by Jun et al (1999), Tunnicliffe Wilson (1981), Fone et al (2003), Jacobson et al (2006), Sobolev et al (2011) andvan Lent et al (2012).…”

“…This work is consonant with earlier findings. Fone et al [37] presented an extended literature review of OR applications in healthcare and concluded that the quality of models had improved from 1980 until 1999 but noted that most models analyse the micro level of the system: specific aspects of some part of healthcare systems, such as Accident and Emergency (A&E) or the departments of a hospital. They point to the lack of more generic models with wider applicability.…”

“…Some of these [5,[9][10][11][12][13] are queueing models, others [14][15][16][17][18][19] utilise simulation or population/ ratio based approaches which use average lengths of stay to quantify the number of patients requiring care resources, for example [20][21][22][23][24]. However, some of these methods, which are mostly stochastic or simulation based, are computationally very complex and require substantial data and logistics [25].…”
