Systematic review of biochemical biomarkers for neck and upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorders

Abstract: A statistically significant association between the musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and biomarkers studied was demonstrated in 82% of sufficient quality articles. Evidence suggested that: collagen repair marker (TIMP-1) is decreased in fibroproliferative disorders; serotonin (5-HT) is increased in trapezius myalgia; triglycerides are increased in various MSD. Limitations in the articles include possible selection bias, confounding, spectrum effect, and insufficient attention to comorbid conditions.
