Systematic Review of Acupuncture in Cancer Care: A Synthesis of the Evidence

Abstract: Acupuncture is an appropriate adjunctive treatment for chemotherapy-induced nausea/vomiting, but additional studies are needed. For other symptoms, efficacy remains undetermined owing to high ROB among studies. Future research should focus on standardizing comparison groups and treatment methods, be at least single-blinded, assess biologic mechanisms, have adequate statistical power, and involve multiple acupuncturists.

“…Acupuncture, a component of the centuries old traditional Chinese medicine paradigm (1), has shown promise among patients with cancer for treatment of toxicities such as nausea, fatigue, and pain (2). To build a strong evidence base for acupuncture in survivorship care, large randomized controlled trials are needed to establish the efficacy of acupuncture for symptom management in cancer (2).…”

“…To build a strong evidence base for acupuncture in survivorship care, large randomized controlled trials are needed to establish the efficacy of acupuncture for symptom management in cancer (2). While acupuncture has been found to be more effective than standard care or usual care in many large RCTs for chronic pain in noncancer populations, the large effect seen in the sham acupuncture (SA) group introduces great uncertainty in evaluating and interpreting the efficacy of acupuncture in the randomized setting (3).…”

“…Akupunkturun kanser ve kanser tedavisine bağlı bulantı ve kusmadaki etkisinin değerlendirildiği bazı çalışmalarda olumsuz sonuçlar elde edilse de, olumlu sonuçların alındığı çalışmalar ağırlıktadır (17). Yapılan bir çalışmada akupressör bilek bantlarının bulantı ve kusmayı azalttığı, bu semptomlar için ilaç kullanımı ihtiyacını azalttığı gösterilmiştir (18).…”
