“…Focusing on a module on democracy and education mandatory for all subject student teachers, this paper has highlighted the need for support through TEDs' professional development and national policy. Digital citizenship is a growing research field (Richardson et al 2021) which has become increasingly international, and the European Commission (2021) lists digital citizenship among the 'Digital Decade' targets for 2030. Although the context of this paper is Sweden, the results are likely relevant for consideration in other national contexts, for instance, where there is ambiguity as to central guidelines on digital citizenship in education.…”

“…In the field of digital citizenship, there is no universally adopted definition (Frau-Meigs et al 2017;Richardson et al 2021) and it is interdisciplinary, which is reflected by recent literature reviews of empirical research and theoretical frameworks in social science (e.g., Jaeger 2021; Jørring et al 2019) and education (e.g., Heath 2018;Richardson et al 2021). Broadly, digital citizenship has been referred to as opportunities and abilities to use technology for participation in society (Lindgren 2017;Mossberger et al 2007), and conceptualizations typically include skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.…”

“…A review of the most relevant keywords revealed that information literacy, ICT, communication, cooperation, and digital content production were the most frequent terms associated with digital skills. However, photographs, objects, audio or audio/visual items, and digital citizenship are the methods used in digital citizenship (Bramwell, 2020;Manzuoli et al, 2019;Richardson et al, 2021;Villalobos et al, 2021;Zhao et al, 2021). Existing research categorizes these methods into five categories, as stated above.…”

“…There are various studies in the field that examine the research base on digital citizenship (e.g. Sánchez et al, 2019;İmer & Kaya, 2020;Fernández-Prados et al, 2020;Kaur, 2021;Richardson et al, 2021;Taşkıran, 2021;Öztürk, 2021). Sánchez et al (2019), for instance, discussed the studies on digital citizenship (Spanish and English) in various databases (Science Direct, Redalyc, Eric, ISI, Proquest, Scopus, Emerald, Dialnet, and Ebsco) between 2007 and 2017 in terms of the concept of digital citizenship and the trends of studies on the subject.…”
