Systematic Review Focusing on the Excretion and Protection Roles of Sweat in the Skin

Abstract: The skin excretes substances primarily through sweat glands. Several conditions have been demonstrated to be associated with diminished sweating. However, few studies have concentrated on the metabolism and excretion of sweat. This review focuses on the relationship between temperature and the thermoregulatory efficacy of sweat, and then discusses the excretion of sweat, which includes the metabolism of water, minerals, proteins, vitamins as well as toxic substances. The potential role of sweat secretion in ho… Show more

“…The ability to lose heat is affected by the prevailing outside temperature as well as humidity. However, it is increasingly being recognised that sweat has a number of other important roles which include the production and secretion of a range of AMPs such as LL-37, lactoferrin and dermicidin, an AMP unique to skin [187189], as well as compounds that maintain skin condition (barrier function) and skin lubricants [190]. Sweat glands also contain stem cells important for renewing skin after wounding and burns [186, 191].…”

“…Exocrine glands produce and secrete a large variety of fluids that are important for digestion, lubrication, lactation and thermoregulation [2832]. Examples of exocrine glands include sweat, salivary, lacrimal, and mammary glands.…”

“…Generally, intestinal tract is an alimentary organ for digestion and absorption. According to general understanding of evolution, other organs like skin [7] and intestinal tract [8] could also share the excretory function. Although there were clinic clues [9, 10] that the intestinal tract could be an alternative excretory organ, the effect of intestinal tract for excretion was not fully understood.…”

“…Actually, kidney, though, is the main but not the only organ for excretion. Then, other organs, like skin [7] and intestinal tract [8], could partly undertake the task, because some metabolites could be detected in sweat [7], and intestinal dialysis [9, 10] was helpful for renal failure patients to improve their symptoms by lowering BUN and serum creatinine. However, the role of intestinal tract in excretion was ignored to a large extent in both clinic and experiment studies, and the fact was not proved with experimental results.…”
