Abstract: Summary:Purpose: To evaluate the methodology of incidence studies of epilepsy and unprovoked seizures and to assess the value of their findings by summarizing their results. Methods: A Medline literature search from January 1966 to December 1999 was conducted. In each selected study, key methodologic items such as case definition and study design were evaluated. “…Epilepsy is a serious chronic neurological disorder that has a higher incidence (70-116 per 100,000 person-years) in children and young people (CYP), under 18 years, than in adults (30-55 per 100,000 person-years) (Forsgren et al, 2005;Kotsopoulos et al, 2002;Meeraus et al, 2013). As many clinical subtypes of childhood epilepsy persist into adulthood (Guerrini 2006), epilepsy has long term clinical care requirements and a high economic burden at individual, family, health service and societal levels in the United Kingdom (UK) and in Europe (Pugliatti et al, 2007).…”

“…Its incidence is highest during childhood, with a median incidence for children aged 0-14 years of 0.822 per 1000 children [1]. It has also been estimated that 70% of all epilepsy syndromes start between the age of 0 and 19 years [2].…”

“…Estimated incidence of epilepsy in developed countries is about 50/100,000/year [21], and these numbers may double in poor countries [22]. In general, we find a bimodal distribution, with peaks of incidence in the first year of life and after 60 years of age.…”
