Systematic review and meta‐analysis: non‐invasive detection of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease related fibrosis in the obese

Abstract: In obese subjects, complex biomarker panels and elastography have been reasonable to good accuracy for NAFLD-related fibrosis; however, these methods have not been well validated. Further study in this high-risk population is needed.

“…Prevalence of NAFLD increases dramatically with age, although this disease appears in different age groups (Zhou et al., 2019). There are strong evidences suggesting steatohepatitis and fibrosis are associated with aging, which results in a higher mortality in elderly individuals with NAFLD (Argo et al., 2009; Ooi et al., 2018). Researchers have identified several mechanisms underlying the age promotion the morbidity of NAFLD.…”

“…Obesity is a significant and rapidly increasing global health issue (Wewege et al, ), affecting approximately 650 million adults worldwide (approximately 13% of the population) (World Health Organization, ). It is associated with several comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (American Diabetes, ), cardiovascular diseases (Parto and Lavie, ), cancer (Berger, ), dyslipidemia (Silva Figueiredo et al, ), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (Ooi et al, ), osteoarthritis (Vina and Kwoh, ), and is characterized by increased adiposity (Galic et al, ). The increase of adipose mass is determined by the balance between lipogenesis and lipolysis (Coelho et al, ).…”
