Systematic palaeontology and biostratigraphy of two Early Cretaceous condensed sections from the Barents Sea

Abstract: Bivalve, brachiopod and cirripede faunas from the latest Jurassic and Early Crctaceous Barents Sea boreholes 7320/3-U-1 and 7425/9-U-l are systematically described and illustrated. Microfossils have also been studied and the cores are dated on the basis of the fossil recovery. The bivalve Rirchia whose zonal sequence has been used for correlation of boreal marine sections is the most important hiostratigrdphic marker group in the condensed Boreal Berriasian-Hautcrivian intervals of these cores. A new species o… Show more

“…3). The basal boundary of the formation is defined by the BCU (Århus et al, 1990;Lundin and Doré, 1997;Osmundsen and Ebbing, 2008). The unconformity which spans from latest Volgian to earliest Valanginian in age is characterized by an abrupt decrease in gamma ray response and increased velocity upward from the underlying shale-dominated Upper Jurassic Hekkingen Formation (Fig.…”

“…In the northernmost part of the Bjørnøya Basin, well 7320/3-U-1 probably penetrates S1 where a 30 m thick coarsening upwards mudstone-dominated unit of early Barremian age sharply overlies condensed carbonates of the Klippfisk Formation (Århus et al, 1990). Core descriptions of the published shallow stratigraphic wells 7230/5-U-9, 7231/1-U-1, 7320/3-U-1, 7430/10-U-1, and 7425/9-U-1 have been integrated in this study (Århus et al, 1990;Århus, 1991a;Smelror et al, 1998;Bugge et al, 2002;Langrock et al, 2003).…”

“…In addition, information from the shallow IKU corehole 7425/9-U-1 (Fig. 1B) penetrating the Klippfisk Formation was used (Århus et al, 1990;Århus, 1991;Smelror et al, 1998). Ties were also established to wells in the adjacent Fingerdjupet Subbasin, in particular to well 7321/7-1 (Serck et al, 2017).…”

“…As it is only known from Spitsbergen the new genus, Seductorithyris, does not add any palaeobiogeographic links and can be considered an endemic element to the fauna. Ptilorhynchia is a component of Boreal faunas, but also appears to have had a broad latitudinal distribution and has even been considered bipolar or cosmopolitan (Thomson & Owen 1979;Århus et al 1990;Sandy 1991) and more recently as circum-Pacific (Manceñido 2002;MacFarlan et al 2011). Ptilorhynchia mclachlani sp.…”
