A Global Analysis of Research Outputs on Neurotoxicants from 2011–2020: Adverse Effects on Humans and the Environment

Neurotoxicants are detrimental to the mammalian nervous system at higher concentrations after exposure, and could result in several neurological abnormalities, especially on the nervous and reproductive systems, and sometimes death. The present study, therefore, aimed to evaluate the research growth on neurotoxicants and their effects on humans and the environment over the last decade from 2011 to 2020. Data on this subject were obtained from the SCI-Expanded of Web of Science, and analyses were performed on the retrieved data in RStudio. The number of published documents fluctuated over the studied years, with an annual growth rate of 4.46%, and the highest number of publications were recorded in 2020 (n = 40). Single authored documents, documents per author, authors per documents, and collaboration index were 24, 0.219, 4.57, and 4.87, respectively. Networks of collaboration in this study were noticeable among authors, institutions, and countries; thus, making efforts to strengthen networking globally would be a good idea. Results from this study also show that the growing trend of research in the field is quite encouraging, thus providing future directions to upcoming researchers, and contributes immensely to reducing the exposure and several disorders linked to these neurotoxicants globally.

Global research direction on Pt and Pt based electro‐catalysts for fuel cells application between 1990 and 2019: A bibliometric analysis

Summary Platinum catalysts for use in fuel cells have gained much attention because of their unique properties such as high catalytic activity and durability. They have enabled a number of different electro‐catalysts for diverse applications. Nanomaterials based platinum (Pt) electro‐catalysts for fuel cell applications have been largely explored and actively utilised to meet those alternate energy needs. This bibliometric analysis examines developments from 1990 to 2019 in the area of Pt electro‐catalysts for fuel cells. A total of 4674 documents were retrieved from two databases (Web of Science and Scopus) after eliminating duplicates with an author per article and article per author ratios of 1.79 and 0.559, respectively, while the collaborative index stood at 1.81. Rstudio software was used to process the retrieved data for bibliometric analysis. The information analysed using this software was annual research output, research by journal, research by countries, research directions, research collaboration index, and frequently used keywords. The analysis showed that studies on Pt based electro‐catalysts for fuel cell have continuously grown over the years with a positive correlation of (y = 0.669x2‐3.7983x + 2.9365; R2 = 0.9738) and leading electrochemical journals accounted for most publications on this subject. The study revealed that China and the USA with a contribution of 1339 articles (28.70%) and 593 articles (12.71%), respectively, dominated research in this field. This study clearly demonstrates the growing research in fuel cell and their use as alternate energy source, which will promote community and industry engagements as well as increase awareness of fuel cell technology.

The genus Merremia Dennst. ex Endl. (Convolvulaceae) is a rich source of structurally diverse phytochemicals with therapeutic relevance. This review presents the first comprehensive, up-to-date information and research progression on the nutritional value, ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and toxicity of the genus Merremia. Using the key search term “Merremia”, relevant documents and information were retrieved from electronic databases. Relevant documents were uploaded in RStudio with installed bibliometric software packages and used for data retrieval, tabulation, and network visualization. Bibliometric analysis revealed that ca. 55% of the studies related to Merremia were published in the last decade, which can be grouped into four thematic areas: (i) drug formulation, (ii) taxonomy, (iii) chemical analysis, and (iv) treatment of diseases. Ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, and biological activities studies showed that species in the genus are promising medicinal plants with various pharmaceutical potentials. However, clinical studies to validate the efficacy of the reported bioactivities and the mechanisms underlying the various activities are lacking and should constitute a future research focus. Additionally, reports on the nutritional and antinutritional constituents of Merremia species revealed that the species meet high nutritional quality criteria for animals and are therefore suitable for inclusion in livestock diets. The few available investigations on toxicity indicated that most Merremia species are safe for human and animal use but not with prolonged chronic administration.
