(1) Background: We aim to examine whether people activate initial protection behavior, adopt evacuation behavior, worry about the possibility of a tsunami, and consider natural hazard-triggered technological (Natech) situations in a sudden-onset earthquake. The literature suggests that risk perception is a significant predictor of people’s response to potential Natech threats. We aim to empirically verify the variables relating to people’s responses. (2) Methods: We conducted a household survey following a January 2018 earthquake in Indonesia. (3) Results: Immediately after the earthquake, almost 30% of the respondents assembled at the evacuation point. However, sequential steps of people’s response were not observed: evacuation immediately after the earthquake was due to worry about the possibility of a tsunami, but this worry was not related to Natech damage estimation. The relevant factors for evacuation behavior were information access, worry about the possibility of a tsunami, and knowledge of groups and programs related to disaster risk reduction (DRR). The survey location (two villages), perceived earthquake risk, and DRR activity participation are less relevant to the behavior of assembling at the evacuation point. (4) Conclusions: Contrary to the existing literature, our results do not support that higher risk perception is associated with evacuation behavior, or that immediate evacuation is related to foreseeing cascading sequential consequences.

With the continuous occurrence of natural disasters, natural hazard triggered technological accident (Natech) risks also follow. At present, many countries have performed much research on Natech risks. However, there is still a lack of Natech research at the regional or watershed level in China. The Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) is not only an industrially intensive development area but also an area with frequent natural disasters. In this study, we selected the YREB as a typical case to study the Natech risk triggered by floods, geological disasters, and typhoons at the regional or watershed level. Four types of risk indicators representing risk sources, natural hazard factors, control levels, and vulnerabilities were developed to assess the spatial patterns of the Natech risks of the YREB. The results show that the Natech risk triggered by floods and typhoons is more serious in eastern area and central area than in western zone and that the Natech risk triggered by geological disasters is more serious in the west part. Approximately 7.85% of the areas are at relatively high-risk and above the Natech risk level based on the comprehensive assessment of three types of Natech risks. The combined population of these areas accounts for approximately 15.67% of the whole YREB, and the combined GDP accounts for approximately 25.41%. It can be predicted that the occurrence of Natech risks in these areas will cause serious harm to both the people and the economy. This work will provide the basis and key management direction for Natech risk management in the YREB.

Disaster risk communicators have long contemplated the significance of sociodemographic dimensions in better understanding and characterising an audience's perceptions. Indeed, various societal and personal factors have been considered as predictors of individual risk attitudes, perceptions and behaviours for an array of hazard types. However, such risk communication issues have only recently started to be explored within the emerging field of conjoint natural and technological disasters, called Natech. In this context, delineating the sociodemographic profile of individuals and appreciating the implications of these aspects on Natech risk communication can assist risk managers in tailoring effective risk communication strategies. This study investigates, among other items, the effects of residents' gender, age, household size, income and educational level on their perceptions of information disclosure concerning Natech risk. The approach draws upon the framework of the Situational Theory of Problem Solving in an attempt to conceptualise the complex issue of information deficiency. Taking into account individuals' situational perception elements, the research focuses on certain cross-situational, sociodemographic features that serve as external, determining factors that shape their problem-solving motivation. Data has been collected from households near industrial parks in Osaka and Kobe in Japan and Yeosu, Suncheon, Gwangyang and Ulsan in S. Korea. The results of our regression analysis indicated mostly weak and insignificant effects, except for gender and age that suggested negative and positive influences to individuals' communicative attitudes, respectively. The implications of the institutional differences between the two countries are also discussed within the sphere of chemical and Natech risk communication.
