Systematic integrated process design and control of binary element reactive distillation processes

Abstract: In this work, integrated process design and control of reactive distillation processes is considered through a computer-aided framework. First, a set of simple design methods for reactive distillation column that are similar in concept to non-reactive distillation design methods are extended to designcontrol of reactive distillation columns. These methods are based on the element concept where the reacting system of compounds is represented as elements. When only two elements are needed to represent the reacti… Show more

“…If N I is negative, the system can be considered unstable . The total variation ( TV ) of the inputs and the integral of the absolute error ( IAE ) were used to characterize the closed‐loop performance of the controllers. “…There are two approaches to deal with the interactions of design and control . One is the simultaneous approach that integrates process design and control together to keep the process economically optimal and make the control technically feasible . In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the application of the simultaneous approach to distillation processes’ design and control .…”

“…Likewise, dynamic high‐fidelity models of the process are represented using approximation and model reduction techniques for simultaneous design and control . Some practitioners considered several subproblems and solved the hierarchy of analyses in a decomposition‐based solution approach . Recently, Pistikopoulos et al decomposed the original system to explore the interaction between design and control using a multiparametric programming approach.…”

“…A disadvantage is that intensified processes possess specific and/or unique properties that may result in a more difficult or complex operation in the presence of disturbances. This is mainly due to the loss in degrees of freedom because of integration of unit operations, functions or phenomena [88][89][90][91].…”
