Systematic and biogeographical study of Protura (Hexapoda) in Russian Far East: new data on high endemism of the group

Abstract: Proturan collections from Magadan Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, Primorsky Krai, and Sakhalin Oblast are reported here. Twenty-five species are found of which 13 species are new records for Russian Far East which enrich the knowledge of Protura known for this area. Three new species Baculentulus krabbensis sp. n., Fjellbergella lazovskiensis sp. n. and Yichunentulus alpatovi sp. n. are illustrated and described. The new materials of Imadateiella sharovi (Martynova, 1977) are studied and described in details. Two new… Show more

“…3) and hypothesized an Indo-China center of origin for the Indo-Pacific genus Condeellum and the Indo-China, Eastern Palearctic and Nearctic Paracondeellum and Neocondeellum. Bu et al (2014) in their in-depth study of the Protura in Russian Far East pointed out that there were no Holarctic and trans-Palearctic species (unlike what was recorded about other arthropods) while there were many endemic species. They concluded that Protura is a group with high endemism and a low level of biogeographical "noise" making them a potentially good candidate for detailed biogeographical analyses when more information will become available for other areas.…”

“…Protura remain a poorly known and neglected taxon in soil ecological and biodiversity studies (Pass and Szucsich 2011) as well as in biogeography (Kaneko et al 2012). Nevertheless, the group is presumed to be a good model for biogeographic analysis due to their low degree of dispersability and limited mobility (Kaneko et al 2012;Bu et al 2014).…”

“…In contrast, Sinentomidae, Protentomidae, and Fujientomidae each has fewer species occurring in China. Undoubtedly, proturans found in Hainan Island are mainly related to the fauna of Oriental Region and are distinctly different from those from Russian Far East and Siberia (Bu et al 2014; Shrubovych 2014), which are dominated by the family Acerentomidae.…”
