System security assessment in real-time using synchrophasor measurements

Abstract: -The increasing amount of renewable power from wind and solar generation causes higher fluctuation in power generation and in general increased distances between generation and load. Both aspects influence the system stability of electricity transmission in a negative way. Therefore, additional measures to ensure stable and secure operation of the system are necessary. Time stamped synchrophasor measurements lay the foundation for development of new realtime applications for security and stability assessment. … Show more

“…A family of fast assessment methods are being developed in the SOSPO 1 project [1] to achieve a secure operation of complex power systems by using realtime algorithms that rely on PMUs. A number of methods have been developed to achieve those objectives [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], based on fast computation of the Thévenin impedances [10] and innovative methodologies.…”

“…Use of WAMS and WAMPAC based on synchrophasor measurements allows simultaneous data acquisition from several points of large systems, enhancing the real-time knowledge of the operators about the state of the system. This makes possible to take corrective actions before the system undergoes a critical condition that could lead it to a blackout [2]. For instance, simultaneous measurements of the phase of voltage in distant substation buses and register of the corresponding differences, allow the opportune beginning of control actions such as variation of the injected reactive power, changes in power flows by means of FACTS and generators redispatch [3].…”
