System-Scale Model of Aquifer, Vadose Zone, and River Interactions for the Hanford 300 Area - Application to Uranium Reactive Transport

Abstract: This report represents a synthesis and integration of basic and applied research into a system-scale model of the Hanford 300 Area groundwater uranium plume, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Richland Operations Office (RL). The report integrates research findings and data from DOE Office of Science (SC), Office of Environmental Management (EM), and DOE-RL projects, and from the site remediation and closure contractor, Washington Closure Hanford, LLC. The threedimensional, system-scale model add… Show more

“…Hydraulic properties have been measured for numerous soil or sediment samples from Hanford (Last et al 2006;Rockhold et al 2013;Rockhold et al 2010;Rockhold et al 1988;Schaap et al 2003). However, almost all cores were taken vertically and the flow was perpendicular to bedding during measurement of these properties.…”

“…Significant research has been performed on segments of the Hanford Reach, particularly in the 300 Area, to understand groundwater‐surface water interactions, and its influences on contaminant plume migration, and carbon and nitrogen cycling in the river corridor (Arntzen et al, ; Bao et al, ; Chen et al, , ; G. E. Hammond et al, ; G. E. Hammond & Lichtner, ; Johnson et al, ; Liu et al, , ; Ma et al, ; Rockhold, ; Stegen et al, ; Williams et al, ; Yabusaki et al, ; Zachara et al, , ; Zhou et al, ). Groundwater modeling studies have also been performed for the Columbia River Basin to evaluate regional aquifer resource (Ely et al, ; Heywood et al, ).…”
