System interactions in socio-technical transitions: Extending the multi-level perspective

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis paper discusses contextual issues in sociotechnical systems and transitions under the Multi Level Perspective (MLP). It emphasises inter system interactions, for which a typology is developed drawing on a review and meta level analysis of published transition case studies. The typology is subsequently associated to the MLP transitions pathways. A novel transition pathway, is derived through this process, namely new system emergence, for systems that emerge from contributions of existing ant… Show more

“…Public subsidies or strategic investments in the case of a new technology (Geels, 2005a), or through legislation in the case of innovative policy and governance arrangements, may be the intentional action that can create niche spaces and trigger a sustainability transition. Transition scholars propose other sources, or pathways of change (Geels & Schot, 2007), however, including pressure from the landscape level (or outside actors), or the build-up of internal regime tensions that ultimately lead to a reconfiguration of actor/technology/institution relations (Papachristos, Sofianos, & Adamides, 2013).…”

“…Raven and Verbong (2009) added two other types of interaction, integration and spill-over. Papachristos et al (2013) argued that multi-regime interactions (disruptive or reinforcing) might influence the niche formation process through enabling niche transfer, interference or the emergence of a new niche. While all these focused on the possible outcomes of multi-regime interaction Konrad et al (2008) identified two ways in which these connections are established: functional and structural couplings.…”

“…Although some authors (e.g. Diaz et al 2013;Geels 2014;Papachristos et al 2013) have recently suggested adaptations of the original model, it still revolves around these levels, and the studies mentioned above in relation to agriculture use it in this way.…”
