System improvements in dense wavelength division multiplexing networks by using advanced optical modulation formats

Abstract: In this paper we focus on modulation formats for optical transmission networks. The most widely used intensity formats such as Non Return to Zero, Return to Zero, Carrier-Suppressed Return to Zero and duobinary are investigated in terms of bit error rate, Q-factor, optical reach and dense wavelength division multiplexing grid, in order to find out their physical limitations and system performance in a transmission system with given parameters. However, phase-based modulation formats like Differential Phase-Shi… Show more

“…This means that NOE influence other formats more critically than DB. Authors in [9] present similar results -DB yields better performance in comparison with NRZ-OOK and DPSK formats, but DPSK formats are slightly better than NRZ-OOK. However, differences in BER values between showed nine channels are small for all formats.…”

“…3 illustrates BER values for each channel. We limited y-axis up to 12, which corresponds to BER of 10 −12 , because it is impossible to measure smaller BER values in practice [9]. Only using DB modulation, after transmission over 40 km fiber span all channels obtain BER smaller than 10 −9 .…”

“…The results exhibited better BER of10 -10 [14]. The paper investigates currently used modulation formats such as NRZ, RZ, CSRZ and DB in terms of BER, Q factor, optical reach and distance, they analyzed under polarization effects, dispersion and spectral efficiency [15]. This paper reviews the different types of advanced modulation formats supported proposed architectures used to carry high capacity of 400 Gigabit Ethernet links.…”

“…We compare the performance of these formats (excluding CRZ and including CSRZ-DPSK) for 16 channel WDM-PON and longer distances, in addition investigating different channel spacing. Analogical approach is applied in [13], authors demonstrate that using DB format, the signal can be transmitted over 130 km long fiber span by using 25 GHz channel spacing. NRZ-DPSK can be transmitted over 100 km, but RZ-DPSK, CSRZ and NRZ over 70 km.…”
