System Identification of the High Performance Drilling Process for Network-Based Control

Abstract: A simple, fast, network-based experimental procedure for identifying the dynamics of the high-performance drilling (HPD) process is proposed and successfully applied. This identification technique utilizes a single-input (feed rate), single-output (resultant force) system with a dual step input function. The model contains the delays of both the network architecture (a PROFIBUS type network) and the dead time related with the plant dynamic itself. Classical identification techniques are used to obtain first or… Show more

“…Another future research direction will be dedicated to the development of hybrid control techniques with focus on TP‐based model transformation applied to control by exploiting the advantageous features of fuzzy control. Several intelligent control features [45–50] will be integrated including fuzzy model features as, for example, those given in other studies [51–57] and other representative applications [58–62].…”

“…Another direction of future research will be dedicated to the development of hybrid control techniques with focus on TP‐MT fuzzy control. Several intelligent control features [38–44] will be integrated including fuzzy model features as, for example, those given in other studies [45–56]. The systematic analysis of developed CSSs is also needed as both research directions are focused on the performance improvement, which should be guaranteed accordingly.…”

“…37 Similarly, third-order transfer function with delay between thrust force and feed-rate can be obtained from variation in thrust force produced during drilling in response to step change in the feed-rate. 3841 These models represent drilling dynamics in conventional materials. The drilling in composite laminates can be considered as a dynamic block relating actual feed-rate with feed per half revolution (FPHR) and static block relating FPHR to thrust force to construct second-order transfer function between thrust force and feed-rate.…”
