System failure analysis based on complex network theory

Abstract: In this paper, we have introduced a novel method for failure analysis of complex systems in the chemical process industry based on recent advances in complex networks. We model the engineering system as a large, complex network and choose to investigate failure from the topological perspective. Then, we introduce a model incorporating the load of nodes and the efficiency to probe the mechanism of cascading failure, and analyze the results based on the topological properties. A case study of a sym-tetramethyl b… Show more

“…Measures such as degree distribution or clustering coefficient have already been analyzed for luggage conveying systems at airports in order to optimize the systems layouts regarding robustness and performance (Hammel et al, 2008). Complex network measures have further been suggested as a means to conduct failure analysis in material flow networks of the process industry ( Jiang et al, 2009). Vrabič et al (2012) propose a method to discover group structures in a network of work systems by using complex network measures.…”

“…The resilience of power and communication networks can be examined via complex network theory (Jiang, Gao, and Chen 2009;Saleh, Esa, and Mohamed 2018). Complex network theory is a statistical branch of mathematics built upon graph theory.…”
