System Dynamics of Cognitive Vulnerabilities and Family Support Among Latina Children and Adolescents

Abstract: The paper describes an approach to developing a data-driven development of a feedback theory of cognitive vulnerabilities and family support focused on understanding the dynamics experienced among Latina children, adolescents, and families. Family support is understood to be a response to avoidant and maladaptive behaviors that may be characteristic of cognitive vulnerabilities commonly associated depression and suicidal ideation. A formal feedback theory is developed, appraised, and analyzed using a combinati… Show more

“…Alternatively, parental monitoring (Kim et al, 2020) and the cultural value of familism, particularly its effective transmission, are protective factors against suicide among Latino adolescents (Gonzalves et al, 2023; Valdivieso-Mora et al, 2016; Vélez-Grau & Lindsey, 2022). Importantly, Latino family support can help to mitigate the deleterious effects of discrimination, bullying, and peer violence experienced within the school setting (Hovmand et al, 2022), pointing to the importance of engaging Latino caregivers in suicide prevention.…”

“…LTM is the first of the algorithmic methods, developed to perform loop dominance analysis, that has been integrated within commercially available system dynamics software (Stella Architect v2.0 and later) and is, therefore, currently applied by practitioners as well as researchers in the field, including Aboah and Enahoro (2022), Aboah and Setsoafia (2022); Hovmand et al . “…It implies that the emotional outcomes may be mediated and moderated by various cognitive appraisal factors. The process is related to all the factors that impact the ability to predict the development of the event and confidence in dealing with uncertainty (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) physiological discomfort, cognitive abilities and the social environment (Charkhabi, 2019;Hovmand et al, 2022;So et al, 2016). Notably, different emotions have distinct appraisal patterns (Jiang & Wang, 2022;Lazarus & Folkman, 1984).…”

Empirical research indicates that these influencing factors mainly include individual's physiological discomfort, cognitive abilities and the social environment (Charkhabi, 2019; Hovmand et al., 2022; So et al., 2016). Notably, different emotions have distinct appraisal patterns (Jiang & Wang, 2022; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984).…”
