The changes within a new product development (NPD) process are handled differently depending on the stage of the project. The changes during the initial stages of the project are addressed by design iterations, while the changes after the product design is complete are addressed using a formal engineering change management (ECM) process. The ECM process is a complex process, especially under a collaborative environment, where various independent entities work together for a common cause of product development. The interactions between the NPD and ECM processes have rarely been investigated in the research community. In this paper, we attempt to study the interactions between the various NPD and ECM process parameters by modelling the processes and simulated the model to understand the parameter interactions. The organisations in a supply chain have been characterised based on their interactions with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) during the NPD process. The organisation process templates representing the NPD and ECM processes of each type of organisation in the supply chain have been modelled. The templates have been used to develop a simulation model representing the NPD and ECM processes for a supply chain. The process variables, such as processing rates, resources, resource composition, resource allocation priority, processing quality and phase overlap, have been included in the model. The results indicate that most of the variables and interactions among the variables have a significant influence on the NPD lead time. By identifying the status of the NPD process, the decision-makers can use these results to develop appropriate management policies to govern their product development projects.

Engineering changes are inevitable and might propagate within and across multiple boundaries. Their management has increasingly become relevant within the interdisciplinary field of systems engineering. A few literature categorization frameworks arising from literature reviews have been proposed to structure the research field of engineering change management. However, the literature reviews are limited in scope, and the existing categorization frameworks do not provide sufficient coverage of the research field in its broader context. This paper addresses both shortcomings. First, a new, holistic and process-oriented literature categorization framework is proposed. Second, this proposed framework is used to categorize a comprehensive list of 427 publications in engineering change management. This categorization highlights not only research areas which have gained much attention, but also those where little research has been done. Third, a citation analysis is conducted which reveals the links between the publications and indicates the most cited publications. The result of this paper will help researchers and managers to (1) navigate through the state of the art in engineering change management, (2) position their work in the overall picture of engineering change management, (3) focus on the identified research gaps and weak points, and (4) search for further research and improvement opportunities. 473 Regular Paperalong the EC process. Second, it provides a relatively complete picture of research in ECM by positioning 384 journal articles and conference papers and 43 books, book sections, and reports in the proposed framework. Third, it presents a citation analysis for selected publications of the core ECM categories. The paper is structured in five remaining sections. Section 2 provides the background for the proposed categorization framework by defining EC and ECM and elaborating existing literature reviews and categorization frameworks. Section 3 introduces the proposed categorization framework. Section 4 presents the literature survey, positioning, and citation analysis; Section 5 discusses those results; and Section 6 concludes the paper.

Modeling prize‐based open design challenges: General framework and FANG‐1 case study

Many organizations are resorting to open prize-based challenges and competitions to identify the best possible designs for their future products or services. As an example, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) hosted an open challenge for designing the drivetrain and mobility subsystem of a Fast Adaptable Next-Generation Ground Vehicle (FANG-1) in early 2013. A $1 million prize was awarded to the team with the highest concept score and the design was subsequently physically implemented and tested. The competition was the first attempt by DARPA to utilize crowdsourcing for the design of complex military systems, which is in contrast with contracting directly with a small number of incumbent firms within the defense industry. The competition attracted over 200 participating teams and the winning team was announced in April 2013. In this paper, inspired by the FANG-1 challenge, a generalizable simulation model for predicting the dynamics of open prize-based design challenges and competitions is developed using a combination of several modeling methods. The model is then applied to simulate the dynamics of the FANG-1 challenge ex post facto, including an approximation of the distribution of team scores as well as the interteam motivational interactions. Using the simulation model, various sensitivity analyses were then performed to identify factors that could enhance future design challenges and competitions in terms of resulting innovation and productivity.
