System aspects of an integrated digital private network-a step towards BISDN

Abstract

Hung Horn, Hong Kong m C T -Much exploration work on ISDN has been done in the past years. In anticipation of rapid progress in fiber optic technologies, fast packet switching and high bandwidth demands for multi-media services, the CCITT study groups have laid down an abstract framework for the Broadband ISDN (BISDN). Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is specified m the target data transport. However, there i s an enormous gap between ISDN and BISDN. We propose here an intermediate solution to bridge the gap, with applications to digital private corporation network. We focus on the DSI rate but extension to other rates ispossible. A new ATM-like transport scheme that accommodates both synchronous and asynchronous bit streams is presented. The approach lends itself to direct implementation of hybrid multiplerers.
