Systems of Systems (SoS) encompass a group of distributed and independent systems. This class of systems requires recurrent adaptation at runtime owing to the uncertainty and variability of the runtime environment. Thus, during their execution, SoS can deviate from the initial specification, which is often a consequence of successive evolutions. This problem occurs mainly due to (a) weak communication between the SoS analysis stage and architecture stage and (b) the lack of links between the operational planning in the SoS analysis stage and systems that must be involved in the SoS architecture stage. This paper proposes a model‐based process that strengthens the links between the SoS analysis stage and the architecture stage in the wave life cycle. We ensure that the mission and role concepts for the SoS definition are sufficiently abstract to allow adaptation to the variability of the environment. This definition is translated into an abstract architecture that guides the choices of the system architect during the design and evolution stages. The proposed language is an adaptation of the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). Furthermore, we define a crowd management SoS to illustrate the process.

To analyze the behavioral model of the command, control, communication, computer, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (C4ISR) architecture, we propose an executable modeling and analyzing approach to it. First, the meta concept model of the C4ISR architecture is introduced. According to the meta concept model, we construct the executable meta models of the C4ISR architecture by extending the meta models of fUML. Then, we define the concrete syntax and executable activity algebra (EAA) semantics for executable models. The semantics functions are introduced to translating the syntax description of executable models into the item of EAA. To support the execution of models, we propose the executable rules which are the structural operational semantics of EAA. Finally, an area air defense of the C4ISR system is used to illustrate the feasibility of the approach.

Systems of Systems (SoS) are complex systems composed of managerially and operationally independent constituent systems (CS). Smart cities are examples of SoS. However, these types of systems impose challenges to traditional software architecture such as highly evolutionary architecture due to the evolution of individual CS and emergent behaviors that results from the interoperability of CS. Executable Models (ExM) are a class of models that can be executed and that can assist on architectural design of SoS. By using them, architects can predict the SoS structure and behavior by visualizing and simulating the SoS still at design-time. On the other hand, as any other emergent technologies, it suffers with absent scientific evidences of its benefits, mainly in industrial context. The main contribution of this master thesis project intends to be the presentation of evidences about the use of ExM to solve problems in the SoS software architecture design. For achieving such purpose, this project is structured in well-defined steps: (i) a systematic mapping study, (ii) elaboration of a conceptual map derived from the mapping study, (iii) a survey to obtain perceptions from software engineering professionals on the use of ExM in the context of engineering simple systems and (iv) a new survey expanding the previous study and to obtain perceptions from software engineering professionals on the use of ExM in the context of architectural design of SoS. Preliminary results reveal that ExM have been reported in diverse SoS domains, offering a dynamic and interactive view to the SoS. We also found that software engineering professionals see ExM as suitable solution for dealing with complex and critical systems as SoS.
