Syphilis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Co-infection among Pregnant Women in Nigeria: Prevalence and Trend

Abstract: Pregnant women are at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to physiological changes that accompany pregnancy, such as congestion of the cervix, edema of the vaginal mucosa, and alterations in the vaginal flora. Syphilis and HIV are both transmitted sexually and so it is not surprise that a substantial number of people are infected with both agents. The rate of HIV and syphilis co-infection varies depending on the prevalence of both infections in the community or the patient group being … Show more

“…HIV-syphilis co-infection, 0.9% in the present study is in harmony with a study conducted in Gondar, 1% [43] but higher than 0.3% in Tanzania [50] but lower than 2.2% reported in north Ethiopia [9]. In the contrary to this, our finding was higher than, 0.05% reported in Nigeria [53].…”

“…This will undoubtedly lead to concentration of HIV positive pregnant women in this hospital and hence the observed higher prevalence. Secondly, the child bearing age also corresponds to the age of maximal sexual activity and has been found to have the highest incidence of HIV infection [ 21 ]. This prevalence is, however, about half of 12.7% reported by Chama et al [ 22 ] in 2010 among women attending antenatal clinic from the same hospital where this study was carried out.…”

“…However, without any interventions from gestation, infants who infected congenitally will grow up with pathogens, especially HBV and HIV [3] [4] [9], and transmit those to others at some stage of their lives. Infection of HIV and syphilis in infants often occur simultaneously due to the similar pathways of transmission (i.e., from the placenta) [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]. Maternal co-infection with HIV and syphilis is dangerous.…”
