Synthetic studies of biologically active natural products contributing to pesticide development

Abstract: Natural product research, including total synthesis, is becoming increasingly important for the discovery of pesticide seeds and leads. Synthetic studies of biologically active compounds such as antibiotics (enacyloxins, polynactin, pamamycins, spirofungin A and B, glutarimides and antimycins), phytopathogenic toxins (pyricuol, pyriculariol, tabtoxinine-β-lactam, gigantenone, phomenone and phaseolinone), marine derived products (pteroenone, β-D-Asp-Gly, didemniselinolipid B, cortistatin A, sanctolide A and giz… Show more

“…Moreover, ( S )-gizzerosine was bioactive and caused gizzard erosion . Shimasaki improved Mori’s synthesis (Figure B) and designed a new synthesis method of ( S )-gizzerosine ,, (Figure C). Fanning developed a facile method for the synthesis of ( S )-gizzerosine from l -aspartic acid in 10 steps with a total yield of 31%, as shown in Figure D.…”

“…Natural products (NPs) not only possess diverse structures and pharmacological properties but also have unique effects, easy degradation, or good compatibility with the environment. They have been used by humans as dyes, food additives, drugs, and pesticides for thousands of years. In recent years, the development of NP-based pesticides has become a hot topic. Osthole ( 1 , Figure ) is a naturally occurring coumarin compound found mainly in Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) and Brassicaceae plants .…”

“…The overuse and misuse of conventional chemical pesticides have led to a rapid rise in pest resistance, pesticide residues, long-term environmental problems, and threats to nontarget organisms. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop novel eco-friendly pesticides with high efficiency, good selectivity, and low toxicity to nontarget organisms. Natural products (NPs) have been an important source for the development of new drugs and agrochemicals not only because of their diverse structures and biological activities but also because of their multiple modes of action and ease of degradation or environmental compatibility. Recently, the discovery and development of novel pesticide candidates using NPs or their derivatives have become a hot research topic. …”
