Synthetic Fatty Acid Triglycerides and Natural Drying Oils

Abstract: eulfur poisoning, and to attain a reasonable catalyst life the sulfur content must be less than 1 grain per 1000 cubic feet. The sulfur sensitivity of catalysts for the alcohol syntheses appears to vary considerably with catalyst composition. However, these catalysts are in most cases less sensitive to sulfur poisoning than Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. Some alcohol catalysts, for example, those for the iso synthesis, are unaffected by high concentration of sulfur (15). ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe authors are pleased to ac… Show more

“…This is much less final film weight gain than for the varnish. This decrease agrees well with the net weight gain of 4% for a linseed oil film reported by Hess and O'Hare (4). The linseed oil picks up more oxygen without drier than with drier for a given state of film immobility.…”

“…There is one band shown in Figures. 4 and 5 which decreases during drying and is not attributable to rosin esters or to unsaturation. This band is at 13.88 microns and is caused by terminal chains, of five or more methylene groups.…”

“…As in heat polymerization, the induced conjugation of unconjugated groups usually precedes polymerization (2,47,57). Again, the functionality of the oleate is considerably enhanced by small amounts of more highly unsaturated fatty acid esters, such as linoleate (36,38). It is postulated that the autoxidation of oleate is catalyzed by the hydroperoxide resulting from the union of oxygen with the linoleate.…”

“…Any further work, however, to elucidate the drying properties of films should initially be done on varnishes made with one resin'-e.g., glycerol phthalate modified with a single drying oil fatty acid. This work, at least, should be correlated w-ith ultraviolet spectral data, peroxide value determinations and total oxygen pickup and total w-eight pickup of the dried films, since it is known that the latter two do not necessarily agree (38).…”
