Synthesis, Thermal Properties, and Morphologies of Amphiphilic Brush Block Copolymers with Tacticity-Controlled Polyether Main Chain

Abstract: A series of brush block copolymers (BBCPs) consisting of poly(decyl glycidyl ether) (PDGE) and poly(10hydroxyldecyl glycidyl ether) (PHDGE) blocks, having four different types of chain tacticities, i.e., [atwhere the it and at represent the isotactic and atactic chains, respectively, were prepared by t-Bu-P 4 -catalyzed sequential anionic ring-opening polymerization of glycidyl ethers followed by side-chain modification. The corresponding homopolymers, i.e., at-PDGE, it-PDGE, at-PHDGE, and it-PHDGE, were also … Show more

“…The effect of tacticity on polymer chain miscibility is also reflected in the different microphases in which block copolymers usually self-organize. Different tacticities can lead to the formation of different microphases such as lamellae, cylindrical, hexagonal, etc., out of copolymers of the same composition. Therefore, tacticity of the blocks is a very important design parameter in block copolymer applications, such as directed self-assembly (DSA) lithography. …”

“…Given the functional group loading capacity of the poly(glycidyl ether), the present strategy can provide model polymers suitable for studying the topological effects on the triblock terpolymer self-assembly. Indeed, the poly(dec-9-enyl glycidyl ether) segment has a reactive olefinic side chain [31] that can be transformed into a variety of functionalities via thiol-ene reaction, epoxidation, hydroboration, and hydrosilylation. Such side chain modification would permit the present terpolymer to self-assemble into three-phase microphase-separated structures, which can be used as templates for constructing complex nanopatterns.…”

“…Tacticity control during polymerization is a very important step since it can significantly affect the thermomechanical and surface properties of the polymers . Good tacticity control can be attained via ionic or coordination process with metal‐based initiators or catalysts . In radical polymerization some tacticity control can be achieved by using specific monomers with bulky substituents or with chiral auxiliary groups, and/or in the presence of polar solvents, such as fluoroalcohols .…”
