Benzyl dimethyl dodecyl ammonium chloride-zinc ion system, as quaternary ammonium salt (QA-Zn +2), was investigated as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in a 2.0 M sodium chloride solution, by different techniques such as weight loss, open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques. The inhibition efficiency of the used system (QA-Zn +2) increases with increasing mixed inhibitor concentrations and with rising temperatures. A synergistic effect exists between QA and Zn +2. Potentiodynamic polarization curves indicate that the used system mainly acts as an anodic mixed inhibitor. The polarization resistance values were (Rp) increased, and the interface capacitance (Cdl) was decreased in the mixed inhibitor system (QA-Zn +2) presence, more than in the case of individual inhibitors. The corrosion inhibition is due to the adsorption of (QA-Zn +2) onto the metal surface, and the formation of a barrier film that separates the metal from the corrosive medium. The maximum inhibition efficiency of 98% was obtained at 200 QA and 50 ppm Zn +2 of the mixed inhibitor system, due to a synergistic effect.

The new synthesized cationic Gemini surfactant (CGS) was tested as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel (CS) in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid using weight loss, electrochemical spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. The inhibition efficiency is increased by increasing the CGS concentration and is almost constant within the temperature range studied. The inhibition was explained by adsorption of the CGS molecule on the CS surface. A mixed-type inhibitor is suggested for the inhibitory effects of CGS as revealed by the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The changes in impedance parameters suggested that the adsorption of the inhibitor on the CGS surface led to the formation of protective films. The adsorption of the CGS on the surface of CS obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were calculated and discussed. Bode plots of CS in 1M HCl in presence of different concentrations of novel CGS.

Polyoxyethylene stearate of molecular weight 6000 as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 2.0 M sulphuric acid

Polyoxyethylene stearate of molecular weight 6000 (P6000) as nonionic polymeric surfactant was prepared by the esterification reaction between citric acid with polyethylene glycol (Mwt. 6000) in the presence of para toluene sulfuric acid, PTSA as a catalyst. The chemical structure of the prepared polymeric surfactant was recognized by FT-IR spectra. The inhibition of P6000 on mild steel surface in 2.0 M H 2 SO 4 solution was investigated using different techniques such as open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and weight loss. The inhibition efficiency of the used polymeric surfactant increases with increasing its concentration, but decreases with rising temperature. The potentiodynamic polarization proved that P6000 acted as a mixed inhibitor controlling both cathodic and anodic reactions. The inhibition process is the result of the adsorption of P6000 on the mild steel surface through the formation of barrier film which separates the mild steel from the corrosive medium. The adsorption of P6000 on steel surface follows Langmuir's isotherm.
