Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Carbene-Stabilized Phosphorus(III)-Centered Trications [L3P]3+

Abstract: Carbene-stabilized [L(3)P](+3) cations have been synthesized for the first time by a reaction between 1-chloro-2,3-bis(dialkylamino)cyclopropenium salts and P(SiMe(3))(3). In addition, the first structural characterization of such an entity is reported. Consistent with the X-ray data, density functional calculations indicate that these P-centered cations, despite their high positive charge, still feature a nonbonding electron pair on the P-atom (HOMO) and a very low-lying LUMO depicting them as poor σ-donors a… Show more

“…A reverse synthetic approach to triply L Rstabilized cations 5 3+ uses P(SiMe 3 ) 3 and 1-chloro-2,3-bis(dialkylamino)-cyclopropenium salts (Chart 1; CPyl = cyclopropenyl, e.g., 5 (MeCPyl)3+ ). 6 This reaction also proceeds sequentially accompanied by the formation of Me 3 SiCl to afford cyclopropeniumyl-stabilized phosphanes. Several other methods for the synthesis of mono-, di-, and tricationic phosphanes have been reported and have been recently reviewed by Alcarazo.…”

“…Imposition of a cationic charge on a molecule containing a phosphine centre enables Lewis acid behavior that diversifies the chemistry of phosphorus. Complexes of RNP + (1) [1] , R 2 P + (2) [2] , RP 2+ (3) [2a, 2b, 3] , R 3 P-PR 3 2+ (4) [4] and P 3+ (5) [5] have been reported with a variety of ligands. [6] In addition, bipyridine complexes of P 3+ (6) [7] illustrate the potentially versatile coordination chemistry of phosphorus.…”
