Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of a T-Shaped 14-Electron Stiboranyl-Gold Complex

Abstract: A cyclic stiboranyl-gold complex (1) supported by two 1,8-naphthalenediyl linkers has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The gold atom of this complex adopts a T-shaped geometry and is separated from the antimony center by only 2.76 Å. Surprisingly, the trivalent gold atom of this complex is involved in an aurophilic interaction, a phenomenon typically only observed for monovalent gold complexes. This phenomenon indicates that the stiboranyl ligand possesses strong σ-donating properties making th… Show more

“…The method was recently applied to show that a gold-antimony(V) complex, with a short Au-Sb contact (2.76 Å) framed by two 1,8-naphthalenediyl linkers, exhibits an aurate-stibonium character, and thus a Au -(I)→Sb + (V) (retro)dativity rather than a Au(III)-Sb(V) pure covalency [26]. 0.0007 Å) as expected for dative bonding [28].…”

“…Further inspection of the structure reveals a Au1-Sb1 separation of 2.8374(4 [12] and [Au(m 2 -1,8-(C 10 H 6 )) 2 SbPh 2 ] (2.76 av.). [13] Another noteworthy feature is the value of the Au1-Sb1-C37 angle (164.80 (11)8) which indicates that the stibine ligand approaches the gold atom to achieve a seesaw rather than a tetrahedral geometry.…”

“…49 And this strong interaction between Au and Sb atoms can also be supported by a comparison of its isoelectronic mercury analogue. 50 Indeed, despite the similarity of the covalent radii of mercury (1.32 Å) and gold (1.36 Å), 38 the Au-Sb contact (2.641 Å-2.661 Å) is markedly shorter than the Hg→Sb bond (3.06 Å). Further inspiration these structures reflect a Sb-Sb bond in the range from 2.783 Å to 2.884 Å.…”
